"Tradition Golf Club in La Quinta has nary a bell nor whistle to recommend it, and is unapologetic about its old-school quietude. Aptly named indeed, life at this exclusive, gated community is decidedly unostentatious, and the grand game of golf takes its proper place: center stage. Not that its denizens couldn't afford to be somewhere more trendy and full-service. Homesites ranging from a quarter acre to an acre are priced from around $500K to $3.5 million, and existing homes start at around $2 million. Spanish Colonial is the architectural rule here, with a dash of Tuscan/Mediterranean thrown in.

But who needs masseuses and Pilates rooms when you've got a natural setting like this? Development guru David Chapman enlisted Arnold Palmer to design the course at the foot of the Santa Rosa Mountains and worked closely with him to turn dusty ranch land into an explosion of wildflowers and impossibly green vistas. Arnie's got a winter place here, but patriotic bias aside, he regards Tradition as the most meticulously done and well kept of any of his more than 300 courses.

Spread over 450 acres of desert and mountainside, Tradition is additionally blessed by a natural windbreak, thanks to the mountains, which may have been part of its appeal to William Rosecrans; the oil and real estate baron bought the ranch in 1938 from the original owners. Rosecrans expanded the now century-old hacienda and trucked in exotic cacti and palm specimens for the grounds, adding handcrafted tiles and lighting fixtures for the dwelling. Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy were among the many swells who passed through and spent the night. Valentino and Churchill, too."
